Halong Bay owns so many caves. According to scientific result from Fauna and Flora International (FFI), living environment is very stable in Halong Bay because of dark and high humidity. Therefore, faunas live in caves not only accommodate to natural severe conditions but also adopt lack of food. So quantity of faunas in caves is very small to compare to outside caves faunas.

Today, almost Halong Bay caves get used to serve tourists for sightseeing and discovery. According to scientists, if tourists concentrate too crowded temperature and carbon will increase to affect natural environment in caves. Therefore, Vietnamese government limited number of persons to visit caves at the period of time. We would like to introduce the most 10 famous caves in Halong Bay for tourists as below.

Surprising Cave (Sung Sot Cave) – Halong Bay Caves

Located in the center of the world heritage named Halong Bay, Sung Sot or Surprising Cave is placed in Bo Hon island and one of the most beautiful cave in Halong Bay and this is also gathered by good-shape limestone which is not able to find in other place.

The road to Sung Sot Cave is under left canopy with stone footsteps, visitors have both enjoying mountain climbing and going to the sky.

The cave is divided into two main parts, the first part look like a large theater. Cave ceiling is covered by a “shimmering” layer with variety of beautiful stalactite, stone statues… all seem between dream and reality. Not ending surprise in the first part, we step to the second part by a small path. This is absolutely a new brilliant scene with a large part to contain even thousands of people. To the peak of cave, we will be surprised by a “paradise” decorated by clean water lake, beautiful landscape, trees and birds are singing. Monkeys are used to get here to find fruit and create agitate in the area.

From the harbor we climb about 50 stone steps and go down about 10 stone steps to reach cave gate with the height of 25 meters. The cave area is widened about 10,000 square meters with thousand of stalactites. In the cave, there is a system of stone paths from gate to the exit with length of 500 m. Two sides of the paths are lampposts and signposts for decoration and lighting. The system of lamps with soft light makes the cave more beautiful.

Sung Sot Cave ceiling has the height of 30 m including concave shapes like decorated softly theater ceiling. Near to the gate, there is huge stones pile up to cave top. This is one of typical limestone cave with high scientific value.

Beside exit gate is a horse-shaped stone and a long sword. Legend said that after battle with invaders Giong God (traditional god) help people here to expel ghosts and devils and then he fly back to the sky. He leave his sword and horse in land to set people’s mind at ease, drive devils away. Today, the cave still has many natural pictures as evidence for the violent battle, horse marks become small lakes or ponds along with broken huge stones.

Luon Cave – Halong Bay Caves

Luon Cave is located in Bo Hon island, 14 km far from Bai Chay to the south. In front of the cave is Tortoise island, on the right side is Heaven Gate. This place has bristled cliffs, blue and clean water as a mirror in the four seasons. Beside water edge, there is a bow-shaped gate in the foot of island called Luon Cave.

Passing through the gate, we meet a quiet lake with luxuriant trees, high and dangerous rock. Around the lake, each gang of monkey is playing below ancient trees, wild orchids bloom fragrantly, and sea life is exciting below water level…

This is a closed group of islands which connect to the sea by a gate with wide of 4 m, height of 3 m and 100 m in length. The lake in the cave is enclosed by mountain with the area of nearly 1 km². In the cliffs, there are fossil snail skins to prove that people are living here many years ago and this place must be a deep valley.

There is no longer this style of cave in Halong Bay, but the attraction is natural scene. That is the harmonious combination between mountain, sea and trees look like no shortcoming from The Creator.

Thien Cung Cave (Paradise Cave) – Halong Bay Caves

The cave is located in the southwest of Halong Bay about 4 km far from the habor and placed in Dau Go island with height of 25 meters above sea level. Path to the cave shows high and dangerous cliffs, covered by trees. Passing through a narrow gate, the cave is suddenly opened by space above quadrilateral area with height of 130 m.

The deeper inside cave the more beautiful we are surprised because of splendid stalactite. In the east wall of cave, a monumental and bulky picture appear, inside it there are fairy-tale characters with lithesome and keen lines even every detail.

Exit Thien Cung Cave, we have a feeling to see a “fine art museum” which stores unique, painstaking items made by The Creator’s magical hands to overcome ability and imagination of people.

Legend

The cave is associated with Dragon King legend. People said that after Dragon King help people to defeat invader, Dragon King come back to his cave, in that year drought come, people lose harvest and have to ask Dragon King for help of making rain. There are so many persons left but nobody come back. Finally, an young couple is determined to find Dragon King. Their daughter was born and named as May, she steal Dragon Prince’s heart and get married with him. The marriage is organised in 7 days 7 nights in the center of cave with decoration of painting in the cave ceiling as today.

Dau Go Grotto – Halong Bay Caves

Among wonderful Halong Bay, there is a cave with simple name: Dau Go Grotto. The cave is located in Dau Go island. Seeing from a distance, the cave gate is turquoise and medusa shape, walking over 90 stone steps we will reach for the gate. The gate ceiling is 25 m in height, from that hundred of stalactite hang down like a magical waterfall.

The cave is divided into three parts. The outer part has a vault and full of natural daylight, the ceiling look like a huge “oil painting” which describes neglected natural landscape with series of colorful stalactite create many strange shapes according to human imagination, such as a flock of elephants, lions or deer… Standing below vault of cave, we have a feeling to stand in the middle of ancient castle.

Walking across the first part through a narrow gate, we will step into the second part of the cave with vaporous light, new pictures appear sparkling and mysteriously. Stone flowers sometimes hide sometimes emerge similar to both familiar and strange images, to make visitors feel curious and afraid.

Next part of the cave, cave area is suddenly expanded. The end of the cave is a fairy well with clear and brimful water. In vaporous light, we see an ancient citadel around and battle is happening between war elephants, horses, soldiers with full of swords and lances, all seem to be rushing but suddenly turn into stone.

The cave called Dau Go (Wooden Head) because legend told that national hero Tran Hung Dao ordered to prepare many ironwood stake here to set up in Bach Dang river, create a famous sea battle to defeat invader in the history. After that, so many wooden pieces still remain in the cave called Dau Go.

If Thien Cung Cave is modern and imposing, Dau Go Grotto is serene and impressive. The book Merveille de Monde (world wonders) is published by French in 1938 specializes in travel and famous landscapes in the world, called Dau Go Grotto as Grotte des merveilles (Grotto of wonders). That is absolutely correct.

Trinh Nu Cave (Virgin Cave) – Halong Bay Caves

Virgin Cave is located in Bo Hon island beside system of Halong Bay Caves… 15 km far from Bai Chay to the south. With fishermen, they treat Virgin Cave as their home. With lovers, they regard as the symbol of love and place to swear with mountain and sea.

Stepping into Virgin Island, we will see a stone virgin girl statue in the middle of cave with long hair, her eyes look toward the sea hopelessly and long desperately form someone.

In front of Virgin Cave is Trong Cave (called Male Cave) with stone boy statue is facing to Virgin Cave. We are able to listen his hopeless shout still to be heard from a distance.

Additionally, Virgin Cave and Trong Cave attract visitors by other legends. Today, if you visit Virgin Cave and meet fishermen here you will hear a love story at the second hand fancifully: “Once upon a time, there are two lovers, they love each other but not able to get married because they are too poor. He decides to get to the open sea for a catch of fish to have money for marriage. And the girl was waiting desperately with no information from her future husband. She is crazy about memory and take a small boat to find the husband. Sea is too large and too many islands, he is not able to hear her shout. He also lose the way to a cave and call the girl desperately. She is exhausted and lay down in the cave, face toward the sea, turn into stone after final call. He is lost in the cave, call the girl desperately, finally turn into stone also – now called Trong Cave”. Today, when boat or cruise go over here visitors seem to hear their call from the caves.

Hanoi to Halong Bay travel guide – Hanoi to Halong Bay trip

Hanoi to Halong Bay trip is one of the most touristic roads in Vietnam because it connect Hanoi to Halong Bay and vice versa. These two destinations are must-see and well-known in Vietnam. We would like to introduce and give advice for safety and most convenient to travelers who travel through this route.

Hanoi to Halong Bay by road

From Hanoi to Halong Bay, you have two choices going with tours from travel agent or by independent bus.

Firstly, we would like to inform that total length of Hanoi to Halong route is from 170 to 200 km according to your starting point. Usually, you need 3 hours if transferred by car, if you travel by bus it takes 3 – 4 hours even 5 hours. In general, if you start in the morning you will reach to Halong at noon.

We advise that you should go by bus if your group has 1 or 2 persons, from 4 persons you should rent a car or minibus for the trip. Cost for air conditioned vehicles is very reasonable if you rent through agents, from 120 – 150 USD for 2 days and 1 night trip with two way transfer.

Hanoi to Halong Bay road map

From the hotel or starting place in Hanoi, you use taxi or xe om (motorbike rental) to go to bus stations such as Kim Ma bus station in Nguyen Thai Hoc street, My Dinh bus station in Pham Hung road, Luong Yen bus station… There are several bus team you might use for Hanoi to Halong Bay trip as following: Kumho, Viet Thanh, Hoang Long Express, Ka Long…

You should use Hoang Long Express and Viet Thanh in priority, they depart every hours. Bus tickets for Hanoi – Halong is around 100,000 VND (equivalent to 5 USD).

Upon arrival in Halong city, you should use taxi or xe om to the hotel or cruise. From bus station to center of Halong, it takes 5 – 6 km and the cost is 50,000 VND for xe om and 80,000 VND for taxi.

New way from Hanoi to Halong Bay

Good news for traveler when Hai Phong – Quang Ninh highway will be launched in 2018 to reduce time from Hanoi to Halong Bay to around 2 hours. With this route, we will drive from Hanoi to Hai Phong via Hanoi-Haiphong highway and connect to Haiphong-Halong highway to shorten length of route to 130 km and reduce time to 2 hours.

Hanoi to Halong Bay by helicopter

Helicopter taxi service from Hanoi to Halong Bay is being operated by Vietnam Helicopter Corporation. This service provides an overview of Halong Bay to tourists from the sky. It helps visitors to watch and enjoy Halong Bay by different way from EC-130 helicopter. Each flight can carry 7 persons including pilot with the route Hanoi to Halong Bay and return. Travelers use this service can choose charter flight or sightseeing ticket from the height of 300 m compares to sea level. The area is 30 km includes most of islands in Halong Bay.

If you want to use helicopter service, you must go to Gia Lam airport to depart from Hanoi and take flight back to Hanoi by helicopter. You can choose one way ticket and transfer back to Hanoi by road or train.

Hanoi to Halong Bay by seaplane

Sightseeing Halong Bay by seaplane is service from Hai Au Aviation, was launched in September 2014. If you use this service, you need to transfer from Hanoi to Noi Bai International Airport and take seaplane flight to Halong Bay. It’s great way for sightseeing Halong Bay from the plane with height of 1,000 m compares to sea level. This service may combine with other service such as overnight cruise in Halong Bay, hotel in Halong… Watching Halong Bay from the height of 1,000 m is very different way to discover Halong, especially traveling with the Cessna Grand Caravan 208B-EX. Your journeys to this northern land of Vietnam has never been so quick, unique and full of excitement. The inconvenience of this service is to transfer from Hanoi center to Noi Bai airport and back. It will takes you more time; and seaplane is still allowed to fly from 1,000 m.

Hanoi to Halong Bay by train

For Hanoi to Halong Bay trip, you might choose to travel by train. The train station use for Halong is located in Gia Lam district. From Hanoi center to train station is about 5 km and 20 minutes by car or motorbike. Train departs at 7:05 am and arrive in Halong at 12:00, ticket price is 15 USD for international travelers.

Nowaday, railway for this route is investing to upgrade and attract more passengers so service for this route is still poor and inconvenient. Additionally, seats are numbered to follow the line from bottom to top of carriage. Bar service exists in each carriage including mineral water, snacks and beer respectively. Probably, passengers can carry maximum of 20 kg luggage and have to protect themselves. Hence, there are luggage slots in each carriage for using.

Train may be not a good choice at this time, it will be better after renovation in 2017.
